Engineering Expo

Update: Our exhibit won a $500 prize

My research group made a presentation for UW-Madison’s Engineering Expo this year. It included a talk about our Large Hadron Collider research and a mock-collider to demostrate the concept of beam collisions. Our demo was made of a large half-cylinder. On the back of the cylinder we had mounted about 100-150 LEDs. Hanging in the center was a crystal, with two lasers pointed on it. We used a fog machine to fill the cylinder with fog, then fired the lasers into the crystal, which scattered the beams across the cylinder (representing particles generated in a collision). Then we lit up the LEDs to represent these particles being deposited on our detector.

Here’s an image (courtesy of Ben Buchli):

At first I thought that was one of those SAD light machines… Waste of money.
